Freak Wave
Subtropical northeasterly trade winds can reach storm intensity causing a fairly high swell. In combination with the flat volcanic slope of the Canary volcanoes this creates high waves on the northern coast of Gran Canaria. They break long before they reach the lava coast resulting in a spectacular scenery.
